A massive turnout looks likely across America as the country delivers its verdict on who should be its leader for the next four years.
A record 125-million Americans are expected to vote in the contest that is too close to call. The marathon election day began bright and early for thousands of people. Long queues began forming outside polling stations from as early as 5.30 am local time on the east coast.

Virginia was among the first states to open its ballot boxes followed by Connecticut and New York. Bush and Kerry both have an army of legal experts on standby amid fears of a repeat of 2000’s disputed result. But neither side thinks a protracted legal battle is likely.
