Unemployment falls in Spain

The Spanish government has said unemployment there has fallen is down. The information comes from the quarterly unemployment survey of 64,000 families throughout Spain which is considered a better indicator than the Labour Ministry’s monthly jobless claims figure.

That is because it includes information on everyone out of work, rather just than those eligible for benefit. Economy Minister David Vegara said: “This demonstrates our economy is not slowing down as some have suggested. Not at all. The latest figures show that after the economy in the second quarter was a little weaker than the first we have now seen a remarkable rise in the number of jobs Unemployment last year hit 11.3%. It increased slightly in the early part of this year, but fell in the second quarter and is now at 10.54%.

However critics say many of the new jobs are short term contracts. The latest figures show the jobs that are being created are mostly in services, but also in industry and construction.
