Afghanistan’s interim leader Hamid Karzai appears to have won a convincing victory in the country’s first democratic elections. Preliminary results from the presidential poll held on October 9 indicate he took more than 50 percent of the vote – enough to stave off a second round.

However, not all votes have been counted and a UN panel is still examining allegations of fraud. Some candidates claimed that people had voted more than once by removing supposedly indelible ink marks from their fingers. Karzai’s main rival Yunus Quanooni conceded defeat on Sunday despite the reports of irregularities.
