Schroeder on trade trip to Libya

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is on a two-day visit to Libya intended to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Shroeder complemented Libya’s leader Moammar Gadhafi saying that the change of his politics was really remarkable. Gadhafi’s announcement in December 2003 that Libya would dismantle its weapons of mass destruction programs was a giant step towards thawing relations with the US. But the main focus of the trip is business. Schroeder visited a new Wintershall oil and gas exploration project some 1000 kilometres south of Tripoli. The company is part of Germany’s BASF group. It has already invested almost 1 billion Euros in Libya.
